About Gau Poang Chinese Restaurant and reviews

Gau Poang Chinese Restaurant has been serving Peninsula customers for over 30 years.  The restaurant started out on Burlingame Ave. for 26 years and moved to San Mateo in 2006.  Owners Jerry and Judy Kuo wanted to provide their customers with high quality Mandarin and Schezuan cuisine, along with excellent service in a family friendly environment.  Gau Poang means “good friend” in Chinese.  Many of our friends frequent and call us by our first names, where others would call them “owners and customers”. Jerry and Judy had a goal in mind, their customers to know them by first name and be able to call Gau Poang home.

We have been serving generations of customer (good friends) on the Peninsula for years, and are happy to see kids who grew up eating Gau Poang come back bringing their own children. We provide dine in, take out, catering, and delivery.  We can accommodate large parties and events as well.  We use fresh and quality ingredients with impeccable flavor.

Happy Hour 8pm – till close

Half off Appetizers, .00 off Wine, Sake & Beer.

(Dine-in only)

Been going to Gau Pong for many years, everything on the menu is excellent, service if you eat there is very good. If you elect to get take out they are quick with the order and the food tastes just as good as eating it...

With so many Chinese restaurants to choose from in the area, this one would probably be on the bottom of my list. The food wasn't anything outstanding.

We have been going to Gau Poang for a couple of years now and they never disappoint. Try the pot stickers, Chinese chicken salad or the Mandarin chicken all are excellent. We will be back.

Note that the title says Chinese American as opposed to Chinese because definitely this restaurant caters to mainstream American tastes and takes advantages of vegetables native to the USA. I noted that the restaurant seemed to have a loyal clientele of white diners who knew...

Spent a couple of days in San Mateo in May and decided to go Chinese one night. Dropped into Gau Poang restaurant in passing and ordered typical fare from Judy Kuo at the register. I could not believe how fast they got it done and...

I have been coming to Gau Poang for over a year now and they never disappoint. Try the pot sticker and the Mandarin chicken - Yummy! We also enjoyed the pork fried rice and the Chinese chicken salad. We will be back again soon.

Loved it when they were in Burlingame; owners Jerry & Judy came out to chat with their customers; so glad they moved just next door in San Mateo; there's ample parking; easy to get to; nice to see Judy still come out to chat with...

Remembered as a family favorite place when Gau Poang was in Burlingame. Happy to find it now in San Mateo. Our family shared mu shu pork and snow white chicken. Made just as I remembered. Great and friendly service. Super chinese food at reasonable prices....

This place is not worth visiting. We were a party of four. One of us summed it up "the best thing about this place is the tea". The service was good but the food was inedible. Another in our party declared it "the worst Chinese...

If this is supposed to be one of the better Chinese restaurants on the Peninsula forget about it. Pleasant enough ambiance. Good enough service. Mediocre food. Hot and Sour soup was black pepper hot instead of ginger and red pepper. There are those who don't...
